Methuselah - Humor Transcending Time
Methuselah is a biblical character believed to have been the longest living person. He supposedly lived to the age of 969.In creating the modern mythical character Methuselah, the character allows Mr. Kohl to use the type of humor he loves, theater-of-the-absurd. It allows for the juxtaposition of time and place, both which the reader should be familiar with and see the outrageousness. It is the absurdity that sparks the humor. The character also allows the reader to gain a perception through the eyes of a time traveler who can reference an earlier time period to provide a backdrop on his perception. The humor is delivered in one or two sentences per page and can jump from century to century not allowing the reader to settle into a time period.Methuselah takes the reader's time to a period other than now. The present can be dreary, so a trip through time allows a reader an escape.
